The AA battery is the most widely used battery worldwide and can be found in hundreds of thousands of devices. IEC codes for AA batteries include the popular LR6 for alkaline AA batteries and HR6 for rechargeable NiMH batteries. The standard voltage for these batteries is 1.5V, while rechargeable batteries typically provide 1.2V.

Introduced in 1907, the AA battery size was standardised by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in 1947, but it was already used in flashlights and electrical novelties before this formal standardisation. ANSI and IEC battery nomenclature provide various designations for cells of this size, depending on cell characteristics and chemistry.

Each AA battery measures 51mm in length and 14mm in diameter. Available AA battery types include alkaline, saline, long-life lithium, and rechargeable batteries of different capacities. Alkaline AA batteries have a storage life of about 6 years, while lithium AA equivalents last up to 9 years before use. Rechargeable AA batteries are now available in NiMH with capacities up to 2850mAh and also in the new “pre-charged” technology, allowing use straight from the package.
