The AA battery is the most widely used battery worldwide and can be found in hundreds of thousands of devices. IEC codes for AA batteries include the popular LR6 for alkaline AA batteries and HR6 for rechargeable NiMH batteries. The standard voltage for these batteries is 1.5V, while rechargeable batteries typically provide 1.2V. New lithium AA batteries offer a much higher capacity at a slightly higher price.

Introduced in 1907, the AA battery size was standardised by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in 1947, but had already been used in torches and electrical novelties for some time before formal standardisation. ANSI and IEC battery nomenclature provide various designations for cells of this size, depending on the cell’s characteristics and chemistry. Each AA battery measures 51 mm in length and 14 mm in diameter.

The available formats for AA batteries are: alkaline, saline, long-life lithium batteries, and rechargeables of different capacities. Alkaline AA batteries have a storage life of about 6 years, while equivalent lithium AA batteries last up to 9 years before use. Rechargeable AA batteries are now available in NiMH with capacities up to 2850mAh and also in the new “pre-charged” technology that allows use straight from the package.
