The AA battery is the most widely used battery worldwide, found in hundreds of thousands of devices. IEC codes for AA batteries include the popular LR6 for alkaline AA batteries and HR6 for NiMH rechargeable batteries. The standard voltage for these batteries is 1.5 V, while rechargeable batteries typically provide 1.2 V. New lithium AA batteries offer much higher capacity at a slightly higher price. Introduced in 1907, the AA battery size was standardised by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in 1947, although it had been used in flashlights and electrical novelties some time before formal standardisation.

ANSI and IEC battery nomenclature assign various designations for cells of this size, depending on cell characteristics and chemistry. Each AA battery measures 51 mm in length and 14 mm in diameter. Available AA battery types include alkaline, saline, long-life lithium, and rechargeable with different capacities. Alkaline AA batteries have a storage life of approximately 6 years, while equivalent lithium AA batteries last up to 9 years before use. Rechargeable AA batteries are now available in NiMH with capacities up to 2850 mAh and also in the new “pre-charged” technology, allowing use straight from the package.
