The AA battery is the most widely used battery worldwide, found in hundreds of thousands of devices. The IEC code for AA batteries includes the popular LR6 for alkaline AA batteries and HR6 for rechargeable NiMH batteries. The standard voltage for these batteries is 1.5V, while rechargeable batteries generally provide 1.2V. New AA lithium batteries offer much higher capacity at a slightly higher price. Introduced in 1907, the AA battery size was standardised by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in 1947, but was already used in flashlights and electrical novelties before formal standardisation. ANSI and IEC battery nomenclature provide various designations for cells of this size, depending on cell characteristics and chemistry.

Each AA battery has a length of 51mm and a diameter of 14mm. Available AA battery types include alkaline, zinc-carbon, long-life lithium, and rechargeable batteries of various capacities.

AA alkaline batteries have a shelf life of about 6 years, while equivalent AA lithium batteries last up to 9 years before use. Rechargeable AA batteries are now available in NiMH with capacities up to 2850mAh and also in new “pre-charged” technology allowing use straight from the package.
