AAA batteries are commonly used in small electronic devices such as TV remote controls, MP3 players and digital cameras. Devices that operate at the same voltage but require higher current intensities use larger AA batteries. AA batteries have three times the capacity of AAA batteries.

However, with increased efficiency and the miniaturisation of modern electronics, many products originally designed to use AA batteries are being replaced by models that accept AAA batteries. A AAA battery measures 44.5 mm in length and 10.5 mm in diameter.

AAA alkaline batteries weigh about 11.5 grams each, while lithium AAA batteries weigh approximately 7.6 grams, and rechargeable (Ni-MH) batteries typically weigh between 14 and 15 grams. The nominal voltage of alkaline and lithium AAA batteries is 1.5 V, whereas Ni-MH or NiCd batteries have a voltage of 1.2 V. The capacity of alkaline AAA batteries usually ranges between 900 and 1155 mAh (3240 to 4158 coulombs).
