The AA battery is the most widely used battery worldwide and can be found in hundreds of thousands of devices. IEC codes for AA batteries include the popular LR6 for alkaline AA batteries and HR6 for NiMH rechargeable batteries. The standard voltage for these batteries is 1.5V, while rechargeable batteries generally provide 1.2V. New AA lithium batteries offer a much higher capacity at a slightly higher price.

Introduced in 1907, the AA battery size was standardised by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in 1947, but had already been used in flashlights and electrical novelties for some time before formal standardisation. ANSI and IEC battery nomenclature provide various designations for cells of this size, depending on the cell’s characteristics and chemistry. Each AA battery measures 51mm in height and 14mm in diameter.

Available AA battery formats include alkaline, zinc-carbon, long-lasting lithium batteries, and rechargeables of different capacities. Alkaline AA batteries have a storage life of about 6 years, while lithium AA equivalents last up to 9 years before use. Rechargeable AA batteries are now available in NiMH with capacities up to 2850mAh and also in the new “pre-charged” technology that allows use straight from the packaging.
