The AA battery is the most widely used battery worldwide and can be found in hundreds of thousands of devices. IEC codes for AA batteries include the popular LR6 for alkaline AA batteries. The standard voltage for these batteries is 1.5V. New lithium AA batteries provide a much higher capacity at a slightly higher price.

Introduced in 1907, the AA battery size was standardised by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in 1947, but it had already been used in flashlights and electrical novelties for some time before formal standardisation. ANSI and IEC battery nomenclature assign various designations for cells of this size, depending on cell characteristics and chemistry. Each AA battery measures 51mm in length and 14mm in diameter.

AA batteries are available in alkaline, zinc-carbon, long-life lithium, and rechargeable variants of different capacities. Alkaline AA batteries have a storage life of about 6 years, while equivalent lithium AA batteries last up to 9 years before use. Rechargeable AA batteries are now available in NiMH with capacities up to 2850mAh and also in the new “pre-charged” technology, allowing immediate use straight from the package.
