The AA battery is the most widely used battery worldwide and can be found in hundreds of thousands of devices.

IEC codes for AA batteries include the popular LR6 for alkaline AA batteries and HR6 for NiMH rechargeable batteries. The standard voltage for these batteries is 1.5V, while rechargeable batteries typically provide 1.2V.

The new AA lithium batteries offer a much higher capacity at a slightly higher price. Introduced in 1907, the AA battery size was standardised by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in 1947, although it had been used previously in torches and electric novelties.

The ANSI and IEC battery nomenclature provides various designations for cells of this size, depending on cell characteristics and chemistry. Each AA battery has a height of 51mm and a diameter of 14mm.

Available formats for AA batteries include alkaline, zinc-carbon, long-life lithium batteries, and rechargeable batteries of different capacities. Alkaline AA batteries have a shelf life of about 6 years, while lithium AA equivalents last up to 9 years before use. Rechargeable AA batteries are now available in NiMH with capacities up to 2850mAh and also in the new “pre-charged” technology allowing immediate use straight from the package.
